Students Write History in their Own Words

Providing students the opportunity and tools to become researchers and writers of history is a powerful learning experience, both for teacher and students.  To compliment a study of the First Fleet for the Australian History Curriculum, Year 4 students, along with a more traditional information report, researched individuals including convicts, mariners, and administrators who sailed from England to Port Jackson in 1787/88, creating a journal using Bookemon that chronicled their unique experiences.  Using primary and secondary sources of information, students were able to understand and articulate the social and  emotional hardships of each of these individuals.  The process created a greater understanding of the historical event and increased empathy for what many individuals had to endure during the early years of Australian settlement.
